恭喜发财,红包拿来 was made with an excerpt taken from a tv-documentary I filmed about a Beijing-expat’s Chinese New-Year. In one of the scenes of the short documentary piece, the main character wanders through a narrow alley in the historical center of Beijing where he is curious about the upside down characters which are pasted next to and above people’s doors. While he’s standing in front of one, the person who lives there walks out of his door to give an explanation about the upside down character and then also explains what a “red envelope”, or hongbao (红包) is. This video is made with the hongbao excerpt.
